Most substance abusers are employed - 74% of illicit drug users and 79.5% of heavy or binge drinkers work. Nearly 60% of Oregon employers, large and small, say that on-the-job substance abuse is of great concern, yet only 13% of Oregon businesses have comprehensive drugfree workplace programs in place.  It is the only program in Oregon utilizing a comprehensive statewide strategy to address the needs of three target populations:  current employees, unemployed job seekers, and emerging workers (students).

At its January 2006 Leadership Summit, the Oregon Business Plan approved the Workdrugfree Oregon Initiative as part of its strategic framework to build a more competitive state economy.  Since then, Workdrugfree Oregon has incorporated all three target populations in its goals, and is the primary mobilization vehicle to unify and deliver workforce prevention services statewide.

Workdrugfree is committed to the dissemination of SAMHSA Workplace Model Programs that meet Oregon’s Senate Bill 267 evidence-based practice standard (EBP), such as Team Awareness. We are also actively involved in original evaluation research to establish EBP programs that fill gaps, such as Supervisor Skills in Solving Performance Problems Early and Increasing Student Understanding of Drugs in the Workplace.

Workdrugfree (WDF) is a program of the Oregon Nurses Foundation, a 501 (C) (3) affiliate of the Oregon Nurses Association.
